AHA vs BHA vs PHA: Which Exfoliating Acid Does Your Skin Actually Need?

The good news? You don’t need to memorize every acid on the shelf.
You just need to know what problem you’re trying to solve.

Alpha-hydroxy acids — AHAs — include familiar names such as glycolic acid and lactic acid.
They are widely used in cosmetic and dermatologic formulations to promote exfoliation and improve the appearance of roughness, uneven texture, pigmentation and photoaged skin.

In everyday skincare language, when you see BHA, you’re usually looking at salicylic acid.
This is where the conversation shifts from surface texture toward oily, congestion-prone skin.

🌸 PHA — Think Gentler Exfoliation
Polyhydroxy acids — PHAs — include ingredients such as gluconolactone and lactobionic acid.
They don’t get nearly as much social-media attention as glycolic or salicylic acid, but they’re interesting for a different reason.
Research has described PHAs as providing exfoliating benefits with better tolerability in sensitive skin compared with traditional AHAs, while also offering humectant and barrier-supportive properties.
PHA MAY MAKE SENSE FOR:
✓ Skin that doesn’t tolerate stronger exfoliation well
✓ Dry or sensitivity-prone skin
✓ Someone new to exfoliating acids
✓ Someone who wants a more conservative exfoliation approach
That does not mean a PHA product is incapable of irritating your skin. The finished formula and the rest of your routine still matter.
“Gentler” is not the same thing as “impossible to overdo.”

🚨 THE BIG EXFOLIATION MISTAKE
Using Every Acid Because They Do Different Things
Your AHA targets texture.
Your BHA targets pores.
Your PHA is gentle.
So… all three must be better, right?
Not necessarily.
Stacking exfoliating products can increase your total irritation load without giving you proportionally better results.
If your skin starts feeling unusually tight, raw, persistently stingy or increasingly reactive, adding another exfoliant is probably not the clever next move.
🛡️ What If Your Skin Is Already Irritated?
This is the part that gets lost in most acid comparisons.
Sometimes the best exfoliating acid is no exfoliating acid.

🧪 Can You Use AHA and BHA Together?
They can appear in the same overall routine — and some finished products are specifically formulated with combinations of hydroxy acids.
That doesn’t mean everyone needs to layer separate AHA, BHA and PHA products on the same night.
In fact, a 2024 clinical study found that a specifically formulated AHA + BHA + PHA blend could improve several signs of photoaging while being designed for sensitive skin.
But notice the important phrase: specifically formulated blend.
A chemist combining acids in one formula is not the same experiment as you stacking three exfoliating bottles in your bathroom.

Ask Yourself One Question
What am I actually trying to fix?
“I want smoother, brighter-looking surface texture.”
→ Look toward AHA.
“My pores clog constantly.”
→ Look toward BHA.
“My skin wants exfoliation but complains about everything.”
→ Consider PHA — cautiously.
“My skin is burning and peeling already.”
→ Put the acid back on the shelf.
Your bathroom does not need the complete hydroxy-acid collection.
